What does pre-tension really mean?

Maybe you are carting your first load or maybe you have been using ratchet straps for ages but still have not got your head around what pre-tension is.

So, what’s all the fuss about pre-tension and why is it important?

One of the biggest mistakes is thinking that having a 2500kg LC Ratchet tie down (RTD) running directly over the load will provide 2500kg of pre-tension. This is not the case.

Typically, a standard 50mm x 2500kg LC RTD will only provide around 300kg downward force.

That 300kg is the pre-tension, don’t get this mixed up with the load capacity of the RTD.

Using the link below which is the 2018 Load restraint guide you can calculate what restraint is required on your load.
